Crockpot Applesauce

It's that time of year.  We're watching for a steal of a deal on apples at the grocery store.  Fortunately, this year we were able to get a bunch from my Grandpa's farm.

I dehydrated two large bags to have on hand for snacks and was wondering how I was going to deal with the remainder on my own.

Within days I saw this post on Crockpot Applesauce.  I didn't know applesauce could be made in a crockpot!  It's so much easier for one person to make applesauce this way.

Peel your apples, core and slice, add a little water (no more than 1cup for a full, large crockpot), cinnamon sticks if you like, and set on low.  Check it every couple of hours and adjust the temperature as necessary.  Before you know it you have fresh applesauce!

Eat, refrigerate, or can.

To can, pour warm applesauce into sterilized, warm/ hot quart jars, and water bath them (place in large pot with boiling water covering the jars) for 15 minutes.  Let sit over night and they should be sealed.

This is a great way to can for your first time too.  If a jar doesn't seal it's something you know your family can gobble up quickly!  Plus, you're practicing with only a couple of jars.

C had a great time helping.  He handed me apples to peel and waited patiently until I sliced and cored them with our apple slicer.  It was his job to place the apples in the crock pot and put the lid on after each "wave" of sliced apples.

It was simple, but he really enjoyed it- especially the end result.
