Homemade Salt Scrub For Body & Hands

I'm so sick of my hands being dry and scaly.  Where we live, my entire body dries out by the end of September.  If I don't take care of it it's almost irreversible all winter and only gets worse.

I recently was able to try an olive oil salt scrub on my hands (I'd never thought to use a scrub on my hands).  It was wonderful.  Unfortunately it was also $40.

I shared this with my sister and she told me to check out her Pinterest page.  Duh!  I've seen many DIY's on scrubs and everything else in the world on Pinterest.  Why didn't I think of that?  Thanks sis.

After looking at probably twenty plus recipes I finally settled on this one (my own creation).
1/2 C Sea Salt
1/2 C Coconut Oil (can also use olive oil)
1 Lime, sliced (can also use other citrus or essential oils, which I recommend)

Put ingredients in blender, mix (blender not required if not using citrus as it's simply to grind the fruit).  Pour into desired storage container.

It's that easy and it's all natural so you know what's going on your skin!

This is now my new every couple of day hand rescue.  I've been using it for 2-3 weeks now and my hands feel wonderful!  No signs of dryness on them!

Now, think of all the money you've saved!  Think inexpensive Christmas gifts too.

Up next on my to do list- whipped coconut oil for use as lotion.  I need to do some research, but I'll of course share my findings and projects with you.
UPDATE:  Read my post here about Coconut Oil Body Lotion

Couple of notes:
This is my first time making this.  I chose coconut oil, because I've heard it has greater moisturization properties.
It smelled wonderfully like lime when I made it, but only like coconut oil the next day.  I think there's something with the citrus becoming masked by the coconut oil.  Next time I'm trying essential oil.
I'll keep you updated as I make different batches.  Thing is, this should last me a while.

Have you made homemade salt scrub?  I'd love to hear if you've learned a thing or two and have tips!

If you're making your own batch, maybe you could try coconut oil with essential oil and report back to the readers if it holds the scent?  Let's help each other out.

  1. I've made my own scrub using a little honey, olive oil, sugar, and orange essential oil. It took quite a bit of essential oil to mask the olive oil smell, but the smell did remain.

    1. Thanks for sharing! Good to know. I definitely plan to use essential oil next time. Also, I used salt because it's cheaper, but sugar is gentler on open cuts. All things to take into consideration.

  2. I usually use sugar instead of salt since we also use this for a face scrub. I like using coconut oil better than olive oil, but during the winter months the coconut oil hardens and makes the scrub hard to use. I usually will use pure extracts instead of essential oils for scent. I have used vanilla, lemon and orange. I have tried several different mixtures. Most recent one is brown sugar, olive oil, orange zest and orange extract. I still haven't decided which mixture I like best but I think white sugar and coconut oil as a base is probably my favorite.

    1. Interesting. How much extract do you use and why extracts instead of essential oils?

    2. I use the extract instead of essential oils just because of the cost. I usually just pour whatever amount of the extract in, don't really measure but probably a capful or so.
