We needed something to do last week just before the warm spell came. These gumdrop structures and marshmallow snowmen fit the bill.
We used fruit flavored mini marshmallows, regular mini marshmallows and small gumdrops (all I could find were the spiced variety). Don't forget toothpicks!
This was my structure. C wanted to do everything exactly as I did.
Here's his attempt. It kept collapsing- especially when he made a roof. However, he learned a lot in the way of math and science here.
I then proceeded to make this "man" or snowman?
C enjoyed making a bunch of fires. Yes, he meant for them to be fires...think camp fires.
I highly recommend using gumdrops for your structures and marshmallows for your snowmen. Mixing creates an unbalanced structure (or simply difficult to build for younger children).
This is an especially great activity for families with diverse ages. Little ones will love to copy big ones and they can all create a special piece.
You could also adapt this to recreate something your child is learning about at school. Build a pyramid, a flower, or a constellation. Get creative.
