Felt Letters & Numbers

I recently created these felt letters and numbers to help C learn his letters and numbers.  It started out as a project solely for letters.  I was going to cut out each letter from felt and then cut out lines and curves so that he could then create his own letter to match.  I still can do that portion, however it was a bit more difficult than I thought and thus have shelved that idea for another time.

First, I selected several colors of felt from my local craft store.  I kept in mind what I wanted to do and approximately how big I wanted each letter or number so I knew how much felt to purchase.  While I was there they also had felt board kits with several scenes.  I decided to pick one up as this seemed like a useful tool for this project and one that would get a lot of mileage.  It's not a necessary part, but an asset to this project once they're working with the felt pieces.

In the middle of cutting out the letters I decided to cut out numbers too.

Then I began cutting out shapes in a quantity to match each number so the child can lay out the number, recognize or be told what number it is, and then count out the specified shapes and possibly match the appropriate color as well.  You could choose one shape and cut out 55 of them, or choose a different shape for each number.  I chose to mix shapes and colors.

I made a couple of mistakes while cutting with the orange and dark green felt, so I didn't have enough to make the little W and Z at this time, however can complete at any time.

If you have an older child they can assist you in the creation of this project.
