I think it's a great ornament idea for any child (as long as their hand fits on an ornament), especially a baby. We made three to give the grandparents each one over Thanksgiving and of course one for ourselves.
Projects don't always go as planned around here.
Tip #1: Purchase a GLASS ornament. Not plastic. Plastic melts under heat. Duh.
Tip #2: Double check that you have EMBOSSING POWDER. Not just fine glitter that looks like embossing powder that got mixed in with the embossing powder. Glitter won't permanently set.
Here's what I started with.
My friend came to the rescue. I remembered she used to do a lot of stamping so I called her for help. Sure enough she had several colors of embossing powder. However, not orange (I was trying to use orange glitter). Each ornament is different as one had white powder added to the orange glitter, another silver, and the last was a combination of the two. They're really not orange. Lesson learned, buy embossing powder so you get the desired color!
Clear Ink (pad or bingo style works)
Embossing powder (color of your choice)
Glass ornament (color of your choice)
Heat set dryer or blowdryer (on high heat, low blow setting)
Q-tips (to clean up a bit if you have a younger child)
Apply clear ink to your child's hand.
Stamp their hand onto the ornament.
Sprinkle embossing powder over the ornament.
Clean up a bit with Q-tip if needed.
Heat set.
To apply the year, I used a tiny paintbrush to apply the clear ink and followed the same steps above.
